Frequently asked questions
Why is there no HD 1280×720 version?
YouTube doesn’t keep an HD thumbnail for every video – it depends on what the creator uploaded. In that case SD 640×480 is the best available.
Why do some sizes have black bars?
SD, HQ and Mini are 4:3, while videos are usually 16:9, so YouTube adds bars at the top and bottom. HD and MQ have no bars.
Can I download a Shorts thumbnail?
Yes, paste a Shorts link. Keep in mind that YouTube’s public links serve horizontal frames – the vertical thumbnail from the Shorts feed may not be among them.
Why doesn’t the one-click download work?
Some browsers don’t allow direct downloads of images from other sites – you’ll see a hint if that happens. Click “Open” and save the image: right-click – “Save image as…”, or long-press on a phone.
Can I use someone else’s thumbnail on my video?
No: a thumbnail is part of the creator’s work, and YouTube may treat a copy as a violation. Borrow the technique, not the image – and make your own.
Do I need to sign up?
